Mineral Drinking Springs
In addition to the soaking springs, Avalon boasts a variety of special mineral drinking waters which can be enjoyed straight from their place of emergence in the rock. One drinking spring is high in Lithium – a mood elevator commonly used to treat Bipolar Disorder. Other springs include a bubbly iron soda drinking spring, a Magnesium-rich “laxative” spring historically named “Dynamite Spring” and Bohemia Spring, which was considered a hang-over tonic to cure the effects of over-indulgence!

The Land
The land of Avalon Springs commands panoramic views beyond Big Canyon’s wooded valleys and into the Mayacamas Mountains. The wind blows soft and steady from the ocean across the tops of the foothills to the West. A majestic rock face stands guard over the plateau where future guest residences are to be built.

The lodge, spa bathing area, and wellness center are shaded in the hot summer months by the hilltop we call the Tor of Avalon (a tribute to Avalon in Glastonbury), which sits on the south side of the property.  The view plateau commands a breathtaking panorama of Boggs Forest, Big Canyon Valley, and the Maycamas mountains beyond to the east.

Across the road, Avalon Learning Village, the related non-profit educational organization, will be home to the gardens and intensive workshops that complement and literally nourish the resort.

It is no surprise that this land has been held sacred by the local community, both modern and native.  Avalon’s development seeks to honor this land with conscious design, inspiring programming, and responsible ecological stewardship.

Dining
The kitchen at Avalon Springs will draw ingredients straight from the garden, offering an ample buffet-style meal plan with large meals twice daily (lunch and dinner) and a juice and snack bar available for breakfast and between-meals needs.

Entrees for meals at Avalon will include some organic local meats, fish, and poultry as well as ample fresh vegetarian fare sourced from local farms and Avalon’s own gardens. Raw food delights will also be showcased on occasion to feature the potency and taste of the freshest produce available.

With every meal introducing healing foods preparation including raw food delicacies, superfood juices, and healing teas, dining at Avalon will be a healing experience.  Unlike many healing resorts, Avalon Springs will have no dogmatic restrictions on diet, allowing the guests the freedom to explore options and choose their own ways to nourish themselves naturally, with everything from raw chocolates to hearty meats and local wines.

California Hot Springs
Avalon’s Spa is centered around the healing waters.

Since early times, people have gathered around natural springs to access their healing power.  Many believe that the word “SPA” originates from the Latin “Salus Per Aquam” or “Wellness Through Water.” The resort embraces this approach by offering various treatments that utilize the natural healing waters that are abundant at Avalon Springs.

Avalon Springs is already connected with the originators and masters in various aquatic therapies including: Waterdance™, Watsu™, Water-Chi, and other rehabilitative therapies especially useful in recuperating from surgery, spinal injury, and illness. Richard Bock, one of the founding partners of Avalon Springs, is one of the earliest and best-known Watsu™ practitioners, a founder of Waterdance™, and an internationally renowned teacher and practitioner of various forms of aquatic bodywork for almost twenty years.  Aquatic therapies have been more successful in Europe until this point. There are very few centers for aquatic bodywork that feature mineral springs in the United States. However, these effective and deeply healing therapies will inevitably become more popular in the United States.  Avalon Springs will become the premiere center for Aquatic Bodywork and water therapies.

While water-based therapies will be what Avalon Springs will be known for, the resort will also offer a full complement of spa services.  These will include massage, herbal and organic healing skin treatments, integrative and alternative treatments, and cleanse and detox support.  Avalon’s approach to healing is one of empowerment and education, offering a variety of choices and healing experiences for guests.

Meet Alice Delcourt, Chef at Erba Brusca

Alice Erba BruscaAlice Delcourt, american-born chef of Erba Brusca in Milan will be curating our journey through food.

From “The American in Italia” about Alice’s restaurant- by Eleanor Shannon

“We sat in the back terrace overlooking the garden, where an unexpected breeze took the edge off the city’s sweltering heat. The overall feeling combined earthy California, rustic France, and chic Italy. Flowers and vegetables bloomed in the garden, whose red lounging chairs and bright red cushions were a nod to Italian design. The restaurant’s tables and chairs had a Parisian café flavor.

A simple, sweet and classy garden.

None of this is by chance. Alice was born in France to a British mother and a French father. She grew up and attended college in the United States and worked in restaurants in New York and London before moving to Milan eight years ago. Since then, she’s fully embraced Italy’s “zero kilometer” philosophy (which favors so-called low impact foods, including meats, cheeses, grains, and honeys) and the organic food movement that began with Alice Waters. She bases her cooking on what’s fresh and available, adding her own flair to whatever she finds.

Each dish has something local and seasonal, but with a twist. As a starter, I ordered an apricot, rucola and Parmesan salad. Rucola and Parmesan salads are plentiful in Italy. But the unexpected apricots added pizzazz. Delightful…”

Iceland 2013

Posted by: | Comments (0)

“Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard

Our Iceland yoga adventure was featured in National Geographic Traveller…Find out why!

A Day in the life of a yoga retreat to Iceland:
“Yesterday we listened. It was one of those days that is marked by such a unique fullness that you no longer need to search for anything. After a morning yoga class and wonderful lunch we hiked along the coast, swam in the North Atlantic on a black stone beach, played in a singing cave and ran down a mountain through lava fields filled with soft moss and as many wild blueberries as we had time for. Time stopped and life started beating by the ripeness of blueberries and the speed of our feet. Our destination was a blurry line of direction and distraction. After a delicious meal and restorative yoga class we were gifted an hour of the most spectacular show I’ve ever seen, the Northern Lights. We spread out in a hay field and instead of finding cows, quite literrally I began to hear a series of “wows”, over and over and over again until the lights died down and it was time for bed.” – Ben Crosky, Guide, 2012

WHO IS THIS TRIP FOR?
This trip is designed for people with all levels of yoga and adventure experience. Men, women, couples, best friends, old friends and soon to be new friends. Our goal is to connect as deeply as possible to nature and to the cultural core of this beautiful place. I mean how often do you get to go to Iceland with a group of people that are passionate about such similar things?! This means we’ll be outside as much as possible, hiking to hot springs, walking in mossy fields, following rivers to see where they take us, climbing glaciers etc. Nothing we do is mandatory but everything we have planned is irresistible. This is not a “luxury yoga retreat” by any means, that’s not why we go to Iceland, but don’t be surprised if you fall in love with all of the charming places we stay, or the healthy food we work hard to find in a country known most for it’s fermented shark meat and it’s puffins.

Our trip will include daily yoga practice, meditation, hot spring soaks, hikes and more. We’ve also made room for plenty of free time and optional trips. Each day will be a little different as we are truly traveling and exploring this beautiful country.

We are working with the best hotels and locations in Iceland to give you 3 different experiences, a fun hotel on a farm in the south, a cozy bed and breakfast in the center of Reykjavik and a world renowned eco-lodge on the magical Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

Days 1-3

We’ll spend 3 days/2 nights exploring the geothermal area of Hvergardi. Hike to Hot Springs, discover waterfalls, eat bread baked in the ground, search for blueberries and more!
Foss Hotel Iceland

Days 3-6

We’ll spend 3 nights in Reykjavik! Here we’ll soak in the magic of this unique city. We’ll practice yoga at the local Yoga Shala, eat delicious food, take day trips and explore the music and night life that is so abundant in this fantastic city. This is your time to explore on your own and do any optional excursions of your liking.

Review:
“The Best Thing We Did in Iceland Was stay at the Forsaela Apartmenthouse”
My partner Ali and I had a number of spectacular experiences in Iceland, from exploring the volcanoes of Vestmannaeyjar to hiking on Mýrdalsjökull – we had an awesome time. The last three nights of our journey, however, afforded us an opportunity to relax and enjoy the city of Reykjavik from the comfortably appointed and perfectly located Forsaela Guesthouse. Lest you think this review is based on location, location, location, however, I’m leaving out the absolute best part about the experience – our host Hlin! To say that Hlin went above and beyond to make us feel at home is an understatement. Great local advice, delightful conversation and spectacular breakfasts await you!

We look forward to visiting Reykjavik again soon. First on the list – booking our accommodations with Hlin. Thanks for making our trip such a success.

Ali & Dave, Washington DC

Days 6-9

From Reykjavik will journey to the magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula to spend our last two nights. Here we’ll be surrounded by the beauty of the ocean, national parks, a gorgeous glacier and simply one of the most magical places on earth!
Hotel Hellnar
Certified by the international certification program GREEN GLOBE 21 as a sustainable accommodation since 2002. The hotel was awarded the Icelandic Tourist Board’s Environmental Award in 2000, and again in 2004
Review:
“Overall this was our favorite hotel in Iceland. The location was perfect for what we wanted to do, the rooms were very comfortable, and we had a great stay.” traveler

FOOD

Most of the food we’ll eat is organic and local. Delicious vegetarian options as well as fresh, local fish and meat for those that eat it will be available. Breakfasts are usually buffet style featuring cheeses, fruits, skyr(icelandic yogurt), cereals, juices and coffee/tea. We can accommodate most food requests as long as we know in advance!

In Reykjavik you’ll be going out for lunch and dinner. Because we will not always be eating together people expect to to pay for 2 meals a day while we are in Reykjavik. There are a few delicious vegetarian restaurants and one raw food restaurant near the studio. There are a lot of international options including a delicious Indian restaurant that we ate at last year.

September 1st, 2nd- South Coast – Frost and Fire Guesthouse

She has since enhanced her studies with Meditation and Ayurveda certifications, and also plays the harmonium daily. She opened the first DY location in Philadelphia with the simple mission of bringing more Yoga to her beloved hometown of Philly. Over time the classes filled and a second location was opened accommodate more people. During the following years the Yoga scene in Philadelphia blew up and 3 more Dhyana Yoga studios came into existence and flourished. Most recently, with the addition of her husband, John, as a co-owner in 2010, the community expanded even more, as did their family. Dhyana and John happily welcomed their beautiful daughter, Lorraine “Raine” Vitarelli in April of 2012 and when they’re not on the mat, you can find them laughing and playing with her and their many dogs and cats. Dhyana teaches both Ashtanga based Vinyasa classes and Kundalini Yoga classes and approaches both lineages with great enthusiasm, love and gratitude.

JOHN VITARELLI

(Co-owner, Co-Director of Teacher Trainings, Lead Senior Dhyana Yoga Teacher) was born and raised in Pennsauken, New Jersey, just over the bridge from Philadelphia, and was involved in sports and physical activity from a young age on various teams throughout the area. John was given a book on Yoga by his sister and spent 2 years practicing in his room with the “Sivananda Companion to Yoga” while studying to be a chef. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Atlantic City in 1996, and around that time turned strongly to Martial Arts to bring some movement and physical discipline back into his life. John continued to study, practice, and teach the Eastern Arts in New Jersey while working at his family’s business (Vitarelli Tile) during the days, until a fellow trade worker referred him to Dhyana Yoga in 2006. He did his formal Yoga Teacher Certification Program with DY that year and has been an integral part of the studios ever since. John has also graduated from Tim Miller’s Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training Program (www.ashtangayogacenter.com) and has completed trainings in Yoga with Duncan Wong and in Thai Massage with visiting teachers. Today John continues his studies in Ashtanga Yoga with Tim Miller and locally with David Garrigues, and attends programs in health and metaphysics at the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, CA. John and Dhyana were married on Guru Purnima in 2010, and live near his childhood home in New Jersey. Besides his deep love for Yoga, he also enjoys making pottery, traveling, learning about wine, politically driven punk rock, hip hop and screamo, gardening, football, hanging with his best friend, Dhyana, his pets, hiking, cooking delicious meals for anyone and everyone!

If location is everything, then Yuva has it all

[Beautiful rocky cove at Yuva, the Aegean sea, mountains and pines]

Yuva Eco-Holiday Centre is in an area known as Faralya, a rural community of 500 people dispersed along several kilometres of quiet mountainside and forest. Here the western escarpment of the Toros range plunges directly into the sea, creating an area of Homeric beauty. Olive, citrus, carob trees and pinewoods surround the area. Much of the forest is protected as a nature reserve and there is a feeling of peace and safety.

This is the Teke Peninsula, an awe-inspiring region steeped in the mysteries of ancient history, and known as Lycia (the land of light). Described by Homer, the Lycians were independent seafaring warriors, who settled here around 1400 BC. The most distinctive archeological features are the unusual rock-cut tombs, copies in stone of their houses and temples.

These are prominent in the local port town of Fethiye (ancient Telmessos) and at Pinara, a nearby ruined city. The Lycian Way is a recently designated long-distance walk that passes through Faralya, linking Ölüdeniz to Antalya via hundreds of kilometres of mountain paths.

The seashore is known as the Turquoise Coast, referring to the beautiful blue waters. Its most outstanding feature is a huge beach that protects a sandy lagoon called Ölüdeniz. This lagoon contains a rare enzyme thought to have healing properties. Belcekiz, the small resort near Ölüdeniz, with beach cafes and restaurants, is about 25 minutes by local bus from Faralya.

Simple nutritious vegetarian and vegan food

[Image: Yuva guests enjoying another delicious vegetarian meal and good company too][Image: Yuva guests enjoying another delicious vegetarian meal and good company too]

Simple, healthy food is at the centre of our philosophy. Our menus are drawn from Turkey’s rich culinary traditions and centuries-old village food preparation methods. The dining area is a covered terrace, with views of the sea.

We serve village-style vegetarian and vegan meals, using many local organic ingredients. Turkey is famous for its range of vegetarian fare. Mercimek corbasi thick red lentil soup is a favourite. Meze is the collective name given to a wide range of small dishes, i.e. biber dolmasi green peppers stuffed with rice raisins and pine nuts, sigara boregi cheese filled pastry rolls, imam bayildi baked stuffed aubergine. Holidays include either half board (breakfast and dinner every day) or full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Extra food and snacks are available to order. A vegan option is available on request. Many meat eaters enjoy our delicious food (you can always ‘top-up’ your diet in Ölüdeniz or Fethiye). A typical Turkish breakfast at Yuva consists of: home-baked breads, tahini, bulghur porridge, local mountain honey, yoghurt, fresh fruit, homemade jam, eggs, cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, olives, tea or herb tea.

Typical evening menus at Yuva

  • Home-made soup with fresh bread
  • Içli Kofte (delicious stuffed and deep fried bulgar wheat balls)
  • Rice or french fried potatoes
  • Variety of salads
  • Fresh local fruit

…or perhaps….

  • Chickpea soup with ekmek (traditional flat bread)
  • Bulgur pilav
  • Stuffed peppers & courgettes
  • Rocket, carrot and onion salad
  • Chocolate pudding

Most holidays include full-board: breakfast and dinner every day, and lunch or packed lunch on 5 days. On half-board weeks breakfast and dinner every day are included in the price. Spring water and teas are served free with meals. Other drinks are not included and are available to purchase, prices are reasonable. Lunches are available to order and cost about £6.

“Superb swimming & delicious food.”

Valerie, management consultant, Belgium.

“Warm clear seas, stunning surroundings, incredible food….”

Teresa & Neville, student & chiropractor, Oxford

Yuva map

[Image: Location map for Yuva, Faralya, Turkey with approx location of Yuva circled]

This is the area where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean. The Greek Island of Rhodes is 40 miles off-shore, and on clear evenings becomes visible on the horizon.

Local Transport

A local bus stops on the quiet road, about 15 minutes uphill walk from Yuva, 3 times per day (approx. 08:30, 12:00, 18:30). From June to September there are more buses. The journey to the shops, restaurants and main beach at Ölüdeniz takes approx. 25 minutes. Local taxis are available. Mountain bikes and cars are available for hire. For group trips, we arrange for a private mini-bus to pick us up.

“I had a most wonderful time in Yuva, I feel I received so much nourishment and nurture and many blessings from such a heart-centred environment…”

Jalilah, counsellor, Surrey

The weather

You can expect mostly sunny weather. From May to September it rarely rains in this part of Turkey. From June to September the weather can be quite hot during the day, and pleasant early in the mornings and in the evenings. There is plenty of shade and often a cooling breeze. After mid-September the weather can break with the occasional thunderstorm. The sea is at its warmest in September and October, and the weather is still very pleasant and warm at this time of year.

Winter Wonderland Retreat

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Celebrate your inner snow bunny this winter in the Sierras. Play in the snow, soak in hot springs, snowshoe or ski from the front door, read by the heat of a wood fire stove. We are so excited to invite you to our Winter Yoga Retreat in February. We are in love with Sierra Hot Springs and can’t wait to share this magical place with you in the wintertime. Abby will warm us up with daily yoga classes by the wood fire stove and the hot springs will continue to heat our bodies and rejuvenate our souls.

This trip is ideal for:

This trip is open to all levels of yoga experience, all ages, families, couples, friends and solo travelers. Most of the food will be vegetarian and we can accommodate gluten free, dairy free and other food requests. Accommodations are rustic but comfortable and provide the perfect home for a yoga retreat in nature.

Abby Tucker

Abby Tucker is a dedicated yoga student, teacher, and lover of life. Passionate and down-to-earth, Abby’s bohemian heart radiates through her life in all its aspects — at home, as a student and as a teacher. She doesn’t differentiate between the practice of yoga and the practice of life, believing that yoga is how you do something, not something you do.

As a teacher, Abby creates an atmosphere of keeping it real while challenging students to their highest potential in the moment. She speaks from the authentic place of her own heart’s experience and is renowned for her unique ability to make the practices of yoga pertinent to the full spectrum of life experiences. Her classes are a profound and authentic offering of dynamic alignment, embodied flow, and skillful refinement. Students are encouraged to work diligently while honoring their own boundaries. Abby believes in empowering students through deep inquiry and skillful application of a pulsation of dynamic alignment principles. Each asana class also includes the essential grounding practices of pranayama and meditation.

Abby spent much of her childhood in a mystical field behind her home in Tennessee. It was there that she first learned that all of nature—including our own human nature—had a pulse, a rhythm and a cycle. She became enchanted by yoga at the age of 10, and began exploring Eastern religions and philosophies in high school and college. It was in 1998 that she finally came to the practices of yoga and, finding her entire life transformed by its alchemy, she left her full-time career in public relations and in 1999 turned her life over to yoga, becoming a full-time yoga student for the next four years. She began teaching in 2002, earned her Anusara certification in 2005, and now holds an E-RYT 500 with the Yoga Alliance. Abby is deeply appreciative of all her teachers, past and present. She studied and apprenticed with Anusara founder John Friend, from whom she learned the beauty and art of teaching and the importance of opening to what the Universe serves up in every moment. She has studied tantric yoga in the Rajanaka lineage with yoga scholar Dr. Douglas Brooks for many years. Above all, Abby is a student of the Divine MahaShakti, the highest flow of life and Consciousness and with complete devotion she continues to fully immerse herself in her yoga studies and in the essential practices of asana, mantra, pranayama, and meditation.

Beyond the “yoga” world, Abby has many delights, interests, and courses of study. In particular, Abby aligns and follows the druidic and shamanic traditions of many cultures, particularly those of her heritage, which includes Native American and Celtic blood. She is deeply moved by the poetry of Walt Whitman and John O’Donohue and is no less moved by the poetry of a baseball game, a thoughtful meal, or skiing down a mountain with her beloved family. You’ll often find her under a redwood tree in the Berkeley hills or up the plum tree in her backyard.

Abby lives in Berkeley, CA, and teaches public classes, workshops, as well as advanced studies programs in the Bay Area, nationally and internationally.

THIS TRIP HAS BEEN POSTPONED!
CONTACT INFO@SOLYOGATRIPS.COM FOR MORE INFO

Join Solyoga Trips and Rachel Meyer for a twinkly wintertime escape to Harbin Hot Springs this December 7th-9th for a cozy weekend of yoga, hot springs, and great company!

Just in time for the holiday season, we’ll head to beautiful Harbin Hot Springs, a sanctuary of unspoiled wilderness less than 2 hours from San Francisco. Harbin has over 5000 acres of privacy, surrounded by many more acres of undeveloped woodland. With its location in Lake County it features the cleanest air in California. Get a dose of earth and sky during the daytime, and in the evening, soak in their indoor hot tub, with views of the starry night sky.

Yoga teacher Rachel Meyer, will lead three soulful, song-infused Bhakti Flow vinyasa classes. And when you’re not kicking it on the mat, you can join her in the kitchen for a casual, pastry-flour-covered, sugar-fueled baking session. Rachel will draw from her own longtime baking-as-yoga practice to explore a few new tricks with you for the holidays. We’ll crank up the tunes, get our hands dirty, and whip up a few cakes in the process. Best of all? The part where you dig into that deliciousness curled up in front of the wood-burning stove.

It’s the perfect opportunity to ground yourself in a relaxing escape before the rush of the holiday season. Come kick it in unspoiled wilderness accompanied by wonderful people and rediscover the soothing embodied meditation inherent in every practice of our lives, whether on the mat or off.

So roll up your yoga mat, bring your appetite, and slip away with us for a three days of sweat and sweetness.

Driving Directions

Harbin’s street address is 18424 Harbin Springs Road, Middletown, CA 95461. Click here to see our location using MapQuest or Google Maps.

Harbin Springs Road is a narrow, curving road with no shoulders and poor visibility. You may suddenly encounter cattle, deer, other wildlife, walkers, joggers or bicyclists, so please drive slowly and carefully.

(Driving through Napa Valley, the Lincoln Ave/CA-29 turnoff is in Calistoga, NOT the Lincoln Ave exit in Napa. Also, be aware that some onboard navigation systems have lead those driving through Cobb onto the unpaved Bogg Mountain Springs fire road. Do not attempt to access Harbin on this road. If you find yourself on an unpaved road on the way to Harbin, turn around.)

Weather
Summer: June through September are typically warm, with little or no rain. Without the Bay Area fog, Harbin can be 30 degrees warmer than San Francisco this time of year. Evenings can be 20-30 degrees cooler than the days, so bring layers.

Fall / Winter / Spring: October through May can range from surprisingly sunny and warm, to rainy and cold. (Snow is rare.) It’s always a good idea to come prepared for showers.

Families with Children

Harbin is a quiet and rather rustic retreat center, and, as such, is not an entertaining or especially appropriate place to bring children for a vacation. We have established a number of rules to ensure a safe visit for children, and to preserve a restful retreat atmosphere for adults. Please familiarize yourself with the following rules, as they are strictly enforced.
• Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. We highly recommend that at least two adults arrive prepared to take turns supervising a child, freeing each other to enjoy a soak, massage, meditation or other adult activities.
• Families may camp away from the Mainside area, or rent one of the lower tent cabins. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed in rooms.
• Children are allowed in the mainside area from 10 AM to 8 PM in the summer months, and 10 AM to dusk in the winter. This includes decks, sleeping deck, dressing room, guest kitchen and the movie theater. If your children are able to conform to adult standards of behavior, they may be present in the restaurant or movie theater after hours.
• Children may use the heart-shaped pool and large swimming pool only. Those not toilet-trained must wear plastic pants.
If you have questions or concerns about our policies for families, please contact us for clarification before your visit.

Clothing Optional
Clothing is optional and nudity is common in the Harbin pools and pool area. The dressing facilities are co-ed. Although clothing is not required anywhere on our property (other than in food service areas, in yoga classes, and on public roads), nudity is less common away from the pools, especially during cooler months. Harbin is not a nudist organization, and guests are encouraged to choose whatever clothing option is most comfortable for themselves.

Technology-Free Zone
One of our primary missions has been to create a place where guests can “unplug” from their day-to-day routines, including the use of technology. For this reason, we do not have phones or televisions in rooms, and limit mobile phone use to the parking lots. We also do not provide Wi-Fi signals in our guest areas. We do offer a few pay phones, plus high-speed Internet terminals (near the Blueroom Café) for those who must stay in touch, but these offerings are intentionally modest to discourage their overuse. Although we recognize that our policy is inconvenient, our hope is that guests will be encouraged to use their time at Harbin to connect with silence, nature and the beautiful fellow beings that reside and visit here.

Maintenance Projects
See our weekday Construction Noise Update for current projects.
• noiseOn “Alligator Day” (usually the first Tuesday of the month) the warm pool is drained around 6 AM, allowing us to make repairs and do maintenance on the water purification system. The cold plunge then becomes hot; the heart pool serves as the warm pool; the large swimming pool serves as the cold plunge for the majority of the day. We also use this day to complete other maintenance projects around the pool area, so do expect noise and possible disruption of guest services.

Area Sightseeing
Harbin is located in the wine growing region north of San Francisco, approximately 2 hours from San Francisco or Sacramento, and about 25 miles north of Calistoga. This southern tip of Lake County is rather rural, with most wine tasting to the south, or boating and fishing on Clear Lake to the north. Due to its quiet roads and clean air, Lake County is growing in popularity with cross-country and amateur cyclists. Middletown features a surprisingly wide selection of restaurants, as well as hometown stores and antique shops. For more information on Lake County, contact the Visitor Information Center at 1-800-525-3743.
